Lovely, Excellent Condition 19th Century Spruce Gum Box with Center Star and Sweet Details wood bowl where it can both serveI found this wonderful antique spruce gum box in Pennsylvania, with the star and manner of the chip carving suggesting to me perhaps made by a Pennsylvania Dutch logger working up north (?) Associated with logging and lumbering activities, spruce gum boxes, also known as gum books, were the work of lumberman, especially in Maine, carved for love ones while working deep in the woods. As here, they were typically carved from a solid piece of wood in the
